What is phenolic foam board?

Phenolic foam board is a type of rigid insulation that is used in flat roofing, soffit lining, and façade applications.

Can you mechanically fix phenolic foam board?

Phenolic foam board can be mechanically fixed, but we only recommend using fasteners and plates that have been manufactured from stainless steel or plastics such as nylon or polypropylene.

This is because some phenolic foams create sulphonic acid when exposed to humidity or direct moisture (for example, from a leak in the roof). The sulphonic acid can cause corrosion in carbon steel fasteners, which could lead to the failure of the fasteners and in extreme cases, the whole system.

Typically, fastener patterns for attaching phenolic foam board would be the same as those used for PIR and PUR rigid boards.
